We have been made aware of a scam taking place whereby you receive a phone call from someone purporting to be from the “BT Fraud Squad.” The caller claimed that the company’s IP address had been made public and so required access to their computer and bank account.
Unfortunately this has resulted in a significant amount of money being taken by the scammers.
Please ensure that your staff are all aware of the potential risks of taking a call from someone who requests access to their computer. Hang up and say you will ring them back instead of answering any questions and granting them access to your system.
Any genuine company who rings will understand that you are being security conscious and usually make a note on your file that you will ring back.
Another security method you can use to prevent this kind of attack is Two Factor Authentication or Multi-Factor Authentication. This a free tool which is offered by many websites now including banks, social media and email providers. You can find out more about Two Factor Authentication on our website here >
